TLDR: Everytime you copy and paste from an AutoCAD drawing that contains microstation linetypes you get another set of themĢ016 added the 'Automatically purge orphaned data' option to the purge command to get rid of them.
Oh and tag them with the drawing they came from, that way we don't have to worry about duplicates. Then Somebody said, "What about copy/paste?" You can't tell what linetypes you need, so just copy all of the MS linetypes, everytime you copy and paste. So a somebody a bit special at AutoDesk decided, we just won't worry about purging them, how big can they be? No problem. So they aren't simple to purge, just because it's not directly in use, doesn't mean it's not needed. But there is a problem, unlike AutoCAD linetypes, MS linetypes can contain references to other linetypes. When they added the ability to import microstation files, they added support for microstation linetypes. These will be evaluated as possible additions to future Rhino Other items that are already on the wish list are linetype scale per object, linetype scale per detail and a "drag and drop" interface to take linetypes, dimstyles, layers, and blocks from one file and copy into another. (I think a Copy button would we really helpful. It is global for that model so if you need another smaller or bigger similar linetype you will need to make a new one and copy the contents of another definition to modify. The scale of the linetype is controlled off of Options -> Annotation -> Linetype.
You will likely never need to make a new linetype ever again! So if you have access to one, import it into your template. Rhino can import an AutoCAD lin file, but we can not distribute it with Rhino. (The default location for templates is "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\5.0\Localization\en-US\Template Files.) Name it something unique, like "arch101_imperial.dwt". You can have the students do it, or have in ready in their template folder the first day of class. This way it will all be done and ready to use. Make sure and pre-assign the linetype to the layers. You can also add dimension styles, layers, layouts, and blocks like title blocks to it. You will need to create a custom template with the linetypes that you always want loaded and start all your new files with it.
